The Spokespeople Project aims to instill a personal sense of responsibility within young adults so that they will learn to contribute positively to their community with their voice.
The Spokespeople Project is the latest Invention of Spokespeople LLC, a small business that started in a humble warehouse location near Cherrydale Point, in Greenville South Carolina in 2021.
In 2022, The Spokespeople Project moved to the heart of West Greenville. The Spokespeople Project has since branched out with 'satellite offices' and 'pop-up appearances' throughout the community, hosting events, creating safe and inviting environments for young adults to socialize at, where they are then also challenged to consider perspectives that were previously outside of their comfort zones.
We offer a variety of fun group activities, and explore the development of effective communication skills and mindful thinking. By hosting creative and fun events, our meetings engage young adults and all attending community members to develop an awareness of local humanitarian issues, and to grow a sense of respect for differences in cultures within our city. We accomplish this by inviting all event attendees to join together in hands-on volunteer efforts, creative enrichment experiences, and by helping them to develop their own VOICES for making positive changes within our city and our world.
Our newest project, a Community Conscious TalkShow, brings guest representatives from local nonprofits to cross-examine topics that affect our community, with a live audience. We encourage dynamic conversation, including thoughtful and relevant questioning, with a goal of coming together to find solutions. We recently finished recording our first show on Mental Health Assistance in the Upstate.
THE SPOKESPEOPLE WAREHOUSE: OUR BACKSTORY
In 2021, we rented a warehouse space in the Cherrydale area so that we could offer young adults a casual and fun environment to safely hang out. While we had them engaged, we used demonstration to show the young adults the value of research and the importance of writing ideas, and following through.
We asked the group to think up a local cause that they wanted to support, that we may be able to help change for the better. They expressed that they wanted a new free local skatepark in Greenville, because the city intends to take Poe Mill Skatepark away. Our group meetups developed into a community of people of all ages, all helping to inspire the young adults to learn about their cause, and how to take action.
We explained activism. We taught them how to organize a peaceful demonstration, and how to run a public petition, which grew to over 1200 signatures in support. We taught them how to paint signs, how to make fliers, and how to build a street team to hand them out. Together we built and painted BMX bike and skateboarding ramps for their event, and demonstrated how to share information and how to market events. We taught them the importance of having thorough liability waivers. We taught them how to start and grow a fun business, while they also had fun!
The Spokespeople Project LLC operates solely on our own resources, hard work, and private donations. While we are currently in the process of pursuing 501(c) non-profit status, please note that your donation is not tax-deductible. If you would like to contribute financially to our organization, you can do so here.
The Spokespeople Project IS GROWING!
On Monday Nights, we invite participants to each design pages for their own small-scale written publication, the 'Now-Say' 'zine. We also offer open microphones for 'spoken word', poetry, or any type of vocalized self-expression, to encourage attendees to develop a comfort with speaking in front of others.
During our meetings, we speak mindfully about current events that affect our city, and offer opportunities for attendees to participate in various volunteer efforts within the diverse communities of Greenville SC.
We also bring visibility to a great number of local community programs which assist with community issues. We've produced our first community conscious talk show, and also we are developing a weekly podcast. With our productions, we aim to interview local non-profits and humanitarian programs, for examination of local issues from multiple perspectives with intent to find effective solutions.
We now are working on connecting with Greenville County Public School System in hopes to bring educational enrichment activities to local high schools. We aspire to host a 'Community Awareness Poster Contest', where high school students will create posters to compete with peers of equivalent grade levels. Posters will be focused on bringing awareness to local community issues that matter to students, and will include student's research on local programs that help those issues, and information on how to volunteer or support those programs. Our dream is to eventually hold a county-wide school event for finalists to compete, publicly, where also non-profit programs can set up tables, for educating the families of students and the general public about what good works these programs offer to help our city.
Our goal is to educate youth in how to speak their truth to the community and its representatives, respectfully and effectively. All of our activities are geared towards encouraging awareness and advocacy: public talk seminars, social media and zine workshops, poster making, open forums, and cause driven events. We want to foster a sense of empathy and care towards people from all walks of life. We want to encourage new young voices to get heard, so that they can realize their power to make positive changes in their own lives and the lives of others.
